X ring vs O ring

Star seal ring is the full name of the star ring, also known as X type ring or meter type ring, the interface of the star seal ring is X shape, is one of the most commonly used seals in hydraulic cylinders, both as a piston seal can also be used to seal the piston rod.

O type ring is the abbreviation of the O type ring sealing ring, the interface of the O type ring is a circular shape.

So, what is the specific difference between the star seal ring and the O-ring?

First, the difference between the X seal ring and the O-ring

1, the difference in the interface structure The cross-section of the star seal ring is star type, also known as the X shape. The O-ring interface is O-shaped, also known as a circular circle.

2, the cost of the difference in the X ring manufacturing cost is high, resulting in high cost of use, O-ring invention early, wide range of applications, low cost of use.

3, the difference in the use of working speed. The applicable ambient speed of the X ring is: reciprocating motion: ≤0.5m/s. Rotational motion: ≤2m/s The applicable ambient speed of the O-ring is: reciprocating motion: ≤0.5m/s. Rotational motion: ≤ 2m/s

4, the difference between the use environment. Because the structure of the X ring has no mold-binding line, and the O-ring mold-binding line is relatively obvious, the star-shaped sealing ring can be applied to the liquid medium, but also can be applied to the sealing of the gas, and the O-ring is more suitable for the sealing of the liquid medium.

5. Differences in specifications and size standards. X ring seals are available in standard sizes of the AS568 series in a limited number of sizes.

O-ring size specifications are numerous, including American standard AS568 series, Japanese standard JISB2401 standard (P series, S series, G series, SS series), in addition to the Chinese national standard GB3452.1-92 and GB1235-76 series, ISO-3601/1 international standard, German DIN3771 standard.

Second, the similarity between the X ring and the O-ring

1, the use cost of the X seal and the O-ring is relatively low compared to the oil seal.

2, the most commonly used materials of X seal ring and O-ring are NBR nitrile rubber, FKM fluoroelastomer, HNBR hydrogenated nitrile rubber

3, X ring without a ring working hydraulic pressure of 5Mpa, and the working pressure can reach 30-40Mpa when there is a retaining ring, the working pressure of the O-ring without a retaining ring can reach 5-10Mpa, and the working pressure of the O-ring can reach 40Mpa when there is a retaining ring.

All in all, where the O-ring can be used, it can be replaced by a X ring, and the sealing effect is very good. However, where the star circle can be used, the O-ring may not be replaced, and it needs to be judged according to the specific technical requirements.

Though O-rings are perhaps the most widely used sealing solution, X-rings offer an excellent alternative for many sealing applications. An X-ring is designed to fit between two parts to fill the gap between them once compressed, whereas an O-ring sits in
